Fake Mantle Baseball: PURE STUPIDITY

Anyone that knows how to use Google would realize that Mickey Mantle died on August 13, 1995. Notice how the COA the seller lists in the auction reads that the ball was signed on July 12, 1997. These sellers are putting these items on eBay with the assumption that YOU (the consumer) are a total IDIOT! Don't let them fool you.

Find real baseball sports memorabilia here.

I just went to the Ebay auction and believe it or not but some nitwit is actually bidding on this fake Mickey Mantle baseball.

Looks like some Looser from the class of 1974 from Middletown High school has a lot of time on to kill. The COA is from a collector who probably got the ball years earlier.

I don't know Mantle's autograph very well, so I can't comment on its authenticity. However, I think you guys are wrong this time. The COA may be bogus, BUT the COA does not state that it was signed after he died. It was the date the COA was issued. This person could have obtained this ball years before. This stuff is a bit silly sometimes. There are people on ebay that resell autographs they bought that they assume are real not knowing any better. This is an all out witch hunt and I really think it isn't fair in some cases. If this were a Mantle signed 1997 signed trading card, then I could see the point.

I'm glad this Blog is generating a lot of interest and opinion. The main thing is that we try to educate people about autographs, both authentic and fake. A legitimate COA issued after a player's passing can only be issued by a "true authenticator" like PSA. Thousands of buyers of autographs on Ebay think that just because an autograph item comes with a "COA" that it makes the autograph authentic. Anyone can scribble an autograph on a baseball and print a "COA." I asked a bidder why they were bidding on an obvious fake Derek Jeter autographed baseball and they replied "Because it comes with a COA." I feel bad for the sellers of legitimate autographs from Steiner Sports because many potential bidders/buyers think they are over-priced, but the truth is "they are authentic." And it also seems every time an athlete is retiring or if a Robinson Cano comes along, the fake stuff floods the market. It really is very sad the millions of peoeple who own fake autographed memorabilia, but half the blame has to go the buyers also, because as long as there is a market for that garbage it will continue. Before you bid on an item always check to see how many of that item they sold in the past, and of other major athletes. If a seller is selling a Derek Jeter autographed baseball then check their feedback history to see how many Derek Jeter's they've sold in the past few months. And if they've sold 10 Jeter's and multiples of other major athletes then that has to raise a flag and a question: "How could they have a infinite inventory of Jeter items without it being Steiner Sports memorabilia?" Always feel free to ask the seller how they've come to acquire so many Jeter's or Alex Rodriguez autographed baseballs. Ask questions. You get the idea. Safe collecting, and buying & selling to everyone.

I am so sick of the IGNORANCE on this site. Most of you have it all wrong and that is why the autograph industry is a laughing stock. Whoever said: "The autograph being real is what is important," has the right idea, PERIOD. Anyone that educates themself thoroughly on the autograph industry and has ANY common sense can buy real items on ebay in some cases for a low price without being duped. The problem is that nobody takes the time to do that and what you end up with is instead of people educating themselves and using common sense, they assume all items are fake, when in fact, there is more real stuff on ebay than people think. Chris, get a f******* life. There is more to autographs than Steiner and PSA....

First of all, I never said I "felt sorry for Steiner Sports," I said "I felt bad for those sellers on Ebay who aren't able to sell their autograph items on Ebay" because there is too much cheap, fake garbage out there. Secondly, the fact that these "Anonymous" comments come in the form of foul language and personal attacks tells me that I'm doing the right thing and hitting the nerves of some people. The fact that so many people are "defensive" also tells me alot. The fact is I really do care and I will continue to do what I'm doing. Keep those comments coming.

Chris, I know you mean well, but how are you qualified? Are you a forensics expert? Whose autograph do you know other than Derek Jeter. Also, Alex Rodriguez has MANY different signatures. Jeter's is pretty easy to spot a fake, but Arod, not as much.

hey im anonymous for a buisness reason.i say what i say about steiner sports because ive always felt that way.there is a problem on ebay for real dealers making it hard to get the fair market vaule for there items because of the fakes.a phoney dealer has nothing invested in there product execpt for the item.a 10 dollar football,a 30 dollar jersey or a 40 dollar helmet.did they pay the player to sign?nope.that saves them anywhere from 20 bucks to 150 dollars and depending on the player maybe even more.its a no win situation for the real dealer and thats why ebay shouldnt be the place to buy auotgraphs.you should use google and search dealers websites.real dealers have there own websites and pay to have there sites appear in searchs and they sell off there site for full retail price.ebay because a seller can sell a barry sanders football for 59 bucks because its fake makes it a wholesale site.a real sanders ball costs a good bit more then 59 bucks to have signed at dealer price but when swartz finds out about the listing dont think they dont have barry register in the very vaulable vero program and have it removed.its really a sad that all the dealers out there with exclusives with players dont register that player within the vero program(which only takes minutes to do)to protect the intergity of there players signature

This is a message from an in person autograph seeker to all of you dealers. Since none of you really have time to obtain autographs in person, because you are running a business, how do you really know who signs in person or not? THere are MANY athletes who will sign for free for their fans. Statements that John Elway only signs for Mounted Memories is complete crap. He will sign in person if you see him, no question and he is quite friendly. SO unless you obtain in person, you really don't know what you're talking about. These guys are millionaires and can tell Steiner and Mounted Memories where to stick it. If you're Dwight Clark and you make most of your living from signing autographs with "The Catch," you would care more. The only person I can think of that WILL NOT sign for free unless you personally know him, is John RIggins. Otherwise, you guys can stick it and continue to live your lives off kissing butt of celebrities.

this site is good informing people about fakes on ebay, some are more obvious then others. but that mantle does look fake. the person signed it very small because they need it to look similar to an authentic one. iv got a mickey/snider/mays authentic ball. i know that that mantle signature is fake. and some buyer named shanesis on ebay sold me some fake AROD sig. and i sent it back to him for a refund but he never sent me my money back. so he screwed me out of alot of $$$

Chris: I'd like to think the 2 autographed Derek Jeter baseballs my son owns are "worth" the $600 they'd generate if they were sold by Steiner. I know they're real, I saw Derek sign them myself on 2 occasions. My son was very lucky. The batting glove Arod gave him would no doubt command a fortune were it sold by a firm like Steiner. In my opinion the problem lies with Ebay. How can you blame eager "collectors"? In fact I'm sure the vast majority of buyers of questionable or cheap autographs consider themselves fans, not dealers. Most of us can't afford to purchase a $300 Jeter-autographed baseball for our kid. I just purchased my first autograph on Ebay as a gift for my son, A Bernie Williams for $40. It looks real but I now think I was burned. I guess I resent the suggestion that it's my fault for trusting someone to sell a legitimate autograph. From now on we'll get ours at the ballpark
